Elissa Goes to Drydock

Elissa Goes to Drydock

The 1877 Elissa, The Official Tall Ship of Texas, temporarily left her berth at the Texas Seaport Museum on Pier 21 on Friday and motored to the Bollinger Shipyard in Texas City to await her turn on a floating dry dock. While Elissa is away, TSM will remain open for visitors.

“We have donations coming in from all over the state and we are appreciative of that,” said Jamie White, director of the Texas Seaport Museum, noting that the Galveston-Texas City Pilots Association has donated its services for the move. Texas A&M University at Galveston provided a chief engineer. Fire Protection Services in Houston is also donating valuable services. To see more photos of Elissa’s move to Texas City, click here.

Funds continue to be solicited for the project. Guidry News Service is the lead sponsor for the Elissa Dry Dock Campaign and will be reporting on the progress of the project. Elissa is required by the U. S. Coast Guard to be dry docked and inspected twice in every five years. Her Hull will be cleaned and painted, and repairs made as needed.
