Lecture “Ima Hogg, A Lady of Privilege Who Gave It Away”

Bayou Bend Historian to Present Lecture November 5 Entitled “Ima Hogg, A Lady of Privilege Who Gave It Away”

Galveston Historical Foundation will host the first of its next series of Menard Lectures at Menard Hall (33rd Street and Avenue O) on Friday, November 5 at 6:30. The lecture, entitled "Ima Hogg, A Lady of Privilege Who Gave It Away," will focus on the famous philanthropist, patron and collector of the arts arts Ima Hogg (1882-1975). Hogg was known as the "First Lady of Texas." She restored and refurbished several properties including the Varner Plantation and Bayou Bend.

The lecture will be held at Menard Hall, Galveston's newest event venue, located adjacent to the Michel B. Menard House, Galveston's oldest surviving residence, on the corner of 33rd and O streets. The full newly restored and expanded Menard event complex comprises the original Menard House, the newly renovated Menard Hall (seats up to 96) and the Menard Guest House, a dormitory style facility for overnight groups, all joined with elegant landscaped grounds and shaded by 100-year-old live oaks.

Beverly Hammet, a Bayou Bend touring docent, will present the lecture.

Hammet is a graduate of the Winterthur Institute, University of Delaware, for the advanced study of 17th- and 18th-century decorative arts. She is a George Washington scholar, focusing in particular on the study of the first president’s decorative arts collections.

The pre-lecture reception runs from 6:30 to 7 p.m., with the lecture beginning promptly at 7. The ticket price for each Menard Lecture is $10 for GHF members, $12 for non-members, with proceeds going to support GHF’s preservation work throughout Galveston Island. Seating is limited; reservations are recommended, and may be made by calling Denise Alexander at 409-765-3410 or by sending an email to education@galvestonhistory.org.
