Historic Galveston to be Featured on New Channel 55 Television Series “Postcards from Texas”

Historic Galveston will be prominently featured on a new history series produced by Channel 55 in Houston. The program, Postcards from Texas is a first-of-its-kind project for the Houston region. The weekly series debuts on Sunday, March 1 at 4 p.m. Episodes will rerun the following Saturday at 7 p.m. Staff members of Galveston Historical Foundation provided research, images, artifacts and interviews for the series.

Each half-hour episode contains four mini-documentaries about places, people and events from the varied history of our area. The stories cover twelve counties with one goal in mind: To make history fun.

Galveston Historical Foundation staff members Dwayne Jones, executive director; Jodi Wright-Gidley, Galveston County Historical Museum director; and Jennifer Marines, museum curator, are featured guests in the series. Galveston’s historic architecture and historic cultural events will be featured throughout the series and on the station’s website. Wright-Gidley and Marines of museum provided the show’s producers with a great deal of research help and provided many historic images and artifacts for the show’s segments on Galveston.

Postcards from Texas will include several web elements such as additional video content, comprehensive links pages to all historical entities in the region, a “where to learn more” section on each story, events listings, and a rotating “Museum of the Week’ feature. Some elements are available now at http://www.houstons55.com/postcards-from-texas.

Topics on Postcards from Texas range from those which mirror current events like the 1940s campaign to save the Battleship Texas or the story of Mexican immigration to Houston to pure nostalgia like browsing Main Street’s department store windows or all you can eat seafood at the San Jacinto Inn.

Postcards from Texas has actively sought the involvement of every museum, archive and historical society in the area. Show producer, Mike Vance, elaborates: “We’ve done a huge amount of pre-production and outreach to make sure that the show reflects the diversity of our area: ethnically, economically and geographically. We want everyone to find something of interest in each episode. We’re truly think this will be both educational and fun.”

Among those partnering with KTBU-TV on Postcards from Texas is Houston Arts and Media, a local non-profit which works to educate Houstonians about their history. HAM is reachable at www.houstonartsandmedia.org.
