Martin Luther King, Jr., Essay Contest Award Ceremony Set for January 18 at Old Central Cultural Center’s Eighth Annual Open House and Reception
Ever since the inception of Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF)’s African American Heritage Committee eight years ago, the foundation has sponsored a contest in which Galveston high school students are invited to write essays focusing on the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., during January, the month of his birthday. Every year the winners are honored at a special open house and reception at Old Central Cultural Center, 2627 Avenue M in Galveston. The event, set in 2009 for Sunday, January 18, is free and open to the public. more

GHF Offers Free Consulting Teams to Owners of Ike-Stricken Historic Homes, Neighborhoods
Architect with Katrina Recovery Experience Joins GHF Staff through February under National Trust "Partners in the Field" Grant, Will Team with Structural and Historic Architects to Provide Guidance
Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) and the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) have announced a new collaboration to provide detailed damage assessment and recommend specific steps toward historically sensitive mitigation to property owners, as they rebuild after Hurricane Ike. Churches and neighborhood groups may also use these services, provided under a NTHP "Partners in the Field" grant. The service will be available through February. more

GHF's Preservation Resource Center to Hold "Galve-Scan 2009" on Saturdays through January
Public invited to Bring in Historic Documents, Photos, for Archival Scanning
Galveston residents are invited to come to Galveston Historical Foundation's Preservation Resource Center (PRC) with their historic photos or documents that can be used to document the history of residential and commercial properties on the island. The documents will be scanned and added to the PRC's archives, safe from loss, and available to researchers and homeowners. Originals will be returned. more

GHF to Host Commemoration of the 1863 Battle of Galveston
Reenactors to Establish Confederate Encampment on The Strand, January 10, with Tours Led by Civil War Historian
On January 10, 2009, Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) will mark the 146th anniversary of the most important military event in Galveston's history: the Battle of Galveston, which took place in the early morning hours of January 1, 1863. GHF Receives Disaster Relief Grant from Meadows Foundation
The Meadows Foundation of Dallas, a long-time supporter of Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF), has announced a new $100,000 grant to help the organization stabilize its operations disrupted by Hurricane Ike.
"GHF is extremely grateful to the Meadows Foundation for this generous gift at a critical time in our history," said Dwayne Jones, executive director of GHF. "This gift reflects the Meadows Foundation's ability to respond to emergencies with compassion and vision. With the Meadows Foundation's help, GHF will be able to continue its operations to assist property owners and businesses as we rebuild the historic island." more

On the Sunday following Ike's Saturday morning strike, GHF executive director Dwayne Jones called a meeting of staff evacuees in Austin. An expedition was organized to return to the island with suitable cleaning and safety equipment (including mold safety information sheets and hurredly designed "GHF Disaster Response Team" t-shirts). The team arrived on the island on Thursday morning, ready to assess the damage to GHF properties, to begin remediation, and to distribute information packets to returning residents. Galveston Attractions Reopening
Two of the island's most popular tourist attractions will reopen for public tours Saturday, Oct. 25, for the first time since Hurricane Ike. The Bishop's Palace, on Broadway at 14th Street, will be open from noon to 4 p.m., with guided tours on the hour. The 1877 tall ship Elissa, moored at Pier 22 just off Harborside Drive, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the Bishop's Palace has been listed as one of the nation's most important Victorian buildings... more

Galveston Historical Foundation Offers Windstorm Exemption to all Galveston County
Galveston Historical Foundation wants to remind residents that they have extended the Windstorm Exemption Program (WEA-1) to all of Galveston County through a grant with the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Partners in the Field Program. The Texas Windstorm Exemption was made possible for all coastal counties by the Texas State Legislature in 1997. Since that time over 800 properties on Galveston Island have been listed.

Six Weeks after Hurricane Ike, Texas Seaport Museum Reopens
Visitors will be able to walk the decks of the restored 1877 tall ship Elissa this weekend for the first time since Hurricane Ike inundated the piers and buildings of the Texas Seaport Museum (TSM), the vessel's home base.
A new 42-foot gangway provides access across heavily damaged piers. Basic electrical service was reconnected on Friday. The newly painted and carpeted gift shop offers retail items that escaped damage. A mandatory inspection by U. S. Coast Guard officials pronounced the vessel ready for the public... more

When I called out to folks to find the door of Galveston Historical Foundation, I did not expect Hurricane Ike to include himself! While Hurricane Ike was bearing down on the Texas coast, the staff at Galveston Historical Foundation and their volunteers were attending to the hurricane preparation procedures authored by nationally recognized experts, GHF staff and aided by the experiences of others (the manual itself weighs over 2 pounds)! more
