Galveston County Historical Museum: Visitor Information

Galveston County Historical Museum

The building was constructed as the City National Bank in 1921 by prominent Galveston businessman William Lewis Moody, Jr. The name of the bank was changed to Moody National Bank in 1953, in honor of its founder. In 1962, the bank moved to its present address at 2303 Postoffice, having outgrown the stately old quarters on Market Street. Moody's daughter Mary Moody Northen donated the former bank building to Galveston County in 1972 for use as a historical museum dedicated to the memory of her father, who died in 1954. During the next four years, upstairs galleries were added, the ornate ceiling was restored and modern heating and air conditioning systems were installed. In 1976, the Galveston County Historical Museum opened to the public. Since 1984, the museum has operated under a joint management agreement between Galveston Historical Foundation and the County of Galveston. In 2001, the museum opened the Galveston County Historical Commission Research Library for onsite research, education, outreach and access to the collections. The museum continues its outreach in the community through educational programming, group tours, on- and off-site workshops, and active collection acquisition.
