Harbor View Drive Architectural Walking Tour

Harbor View Drive Architectural Walking Tour This Saturday

This Saturday, September 18, Galveston Historical Foundation Executive Director Dwayne Jones, an expert in Mid-Century Modern architecture, will lead an architectural walking tour of his own street--Galveston's waterfront Harbor View Drive. Cost is $5 for GHF members, $7 for non-members. Limit 20 per tour. No Reservations. First-come, first-served. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle. Dogs on leashes are welcome too. The tour will last about an hour and a half.

The Galveston Daily News reported in July 1954 that Harbor View became the latest Galveston subdivision approved and platted on the East End flats. Designed by Houston landscape architect Herbert Skogland for a handful of local investors, Harbor View followed the natural land form along the South Jetty into Galveston Bay. The neighborhood became popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s for new construction of single family homes. Several important Galveston and Houston architects designed houses as well as local builder Gus Loomis. The neighborhood today is an enclave of post World War II housing still recovering from Hurricane Ike damages.

The Harbor View Walking tour begins at 9 a.m. Meet-up location is 1306 Harbor View Drive. For more information, call 409-765-3410.
