GHF Announces Fall Saturday “How-To” Class Series

Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF)’s popular and informative fall class series starts Saturday, October 3, with “I Bought an Old House, Now What,” a class that will teach participants how to invest in research and planning at the beginning of a restoration project so as to save money and help insure desired results.

“Education has always been an important part of our mission at GHF,” said Brian Davis, director of Preservation and Conservation Services, “and we continue to expand and strengthen our Saturday demonstration/presentation classes for the community.”

Presentations will take place on Saturday mornings and will usually last two hours. Seating may be limited, so reservations are suggested. Admission to the entire series is $45 for GHF members and $55 for non-members; Admission to individual classes is $10 for GHF members and $12 for non-members. All classes except the October 24 cemetery class will be held at the GHF Architectural Salvage Warehouse at the Sealy Garage, second floor, 908 23rd Street. A downloadable registration form is available online at www.galvestonhistory.org. Or call Matt Farragher at 409-750-9108 to register.

Fall classes include:

October 3: “I Bought an Old House, Now What?” at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Brian Davis, Director of GHF’s Preservation and Conservation Services Department, will present this class that teaches participants to invest time and energy in research and planning at the beginning of a restoration project in order to save money and help insure desired results. Davis will also discuss what questions to ask a contractor, how to develop a scope of work and get bids, and how to go through the application process for city commissions.

October 10: “How to Repair Your Historic Shutters and Windows” at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Long-time Island craftsman Kerry Thomas of Old World Craftsman will share his many years of experience by teaching this class on how to maintain and repair historic shutters and windows.

October 24: “How to Clean and Maintain Cemetery Monuments” at Galveston’s Broadway Cemetery Complex, 40th Street entrance. GHF’s Preservation Resource Center Coordinator Matt Farragher will teach this class on how to properly clean headstones and monuments without using harsh, potentially damaging materials. The class is valuable for church or service groups that maintain cemeteries or for individuals interested in learning how to better care for their neighborhood or family monuments. The class will also include a short tour of Galveston’s historic Broadway Cemetery complex.

November 7: “Research Your Historic Property” at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Architectural Salvage Warehouse. GHF’s Preservation Resource Center Coordinator Matt Farragher will lead this class on how to do the research that uncovers the stories behind a historic property. Participants will learn where to find documentation about what a building once looked like, events associated with the site, and past inhabitants and how they lived.

November 14: “Repairing and Restoring Your Wood Floors” at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the Architectural Salvage Warehouse. Local flooring craftsman Bill Hynek will present a class on what homeowners need to know about restoring their historic wood floors. Bill will supply a hands-on learning experience showing how even the most worn floors can be brought back to their former glory.
