Vendor Booths Still Available For Galveston's Dickens On The Strand Victorian Holiday Festival

There is still time to apply for a booth at Galveston Historical Foundation’s 35th annual Dickens on The Strand, Galveston's renowned Victorian holiday festival, scheduled for December 6 and 7, 2008. Galveston Historical Foundation invites vendors who would like to sell their traditional food or wares at the festival to download vendor guidelines and an application form at www.galvestonhistory.org/Dickens_Entertainers_Vendors.asp. APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY NOVEMBER 15, 2008

Since 1974, Dickens on The Strand has created fine family fun and entertainment with a Victorian flair on the downtown streets of historic Galveston Island. The festival brings Galveston's Strand National Historic Landmark District alive with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens' London.

Visitors mix and mingle with costumed entertainers and volunteers as more than 150 period vendors hawk their wares amid one of the country's finest collections of 19th-century commercial architecture.

Named one of the “100 Most Fun Places To Be In the World” by travel writer Alan Davis, Dickens on The Strand is not just a tradition for Texans, but for visitors from all over the world. The event has achieved national, regional and local recognition as one of the “Top One Hundred Festivals” in North America by the American Bus Association, one of the “Top Ten Festivals” in the state by Texas Highways Magazine, Houston Chronicle’s readers’ pick in 2006 for Ultimate Holiday Event and “Top Event in December” by Texas Monthly in 2007.

WHO: Galveston Historical Foundation and 3,000 costumed volunteers, vendors, entertainers and characters from the works of Charles Dickens.

WHEN: December 6 & 7, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE: The Strand National Historic Landmark District on Galveston Island, 50 miles southeast of Houston. The Strand and Mechanic Street boast one of the largest collections of restored Victorian commercials buildings in the nation.

HOW: The Strand and Mechanic Street are transformed into Victorian London with costumed street vendors and entertainers. All visitors are encouraged to dress in Victorian costumes to support the event’s theme, which is based around Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”
