GHF Introduces Weekly Walking Tours of Historic Downtown Strand

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, Galveston Historical Foundation will begin offering weekly walking tours of Galveston's most famous and important downtown street: the Strand. Each Saturday from May 29 through September 6, 2010, the new Strand walking tours will begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately one hour. Meet-up will be at GHF's downtown Le Clere building at 2417 Strand and will commence down the street five blocks, ending at Hendley Row, a pre-Civil-War group of buildings located at 20th and Strand. The tour will focus not only on the architectural signifance of the buildings on the Strand, but on the culture and history that contributed to the Strand being the “Wall Street of the Southwest” in the late 1800s.
