GHF Extends Deadline for Nominations to Heritage at Risk List to Monday, April 12
2010 Heritage at Risk List Nomination Form (pdf)
The Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) annually compiles a listing of endangered historic resources on Galveston Island that are at risk of being lost. The main focus of this list is to shine a light on these endangered resources, garner public support, assist property owners when possible, and help guide GHF’s preservation priorities for the future. GHF calls on the public for their input so that the Foundation’s goals reflect those of the community we serve.

The Heritage at Risk List is not limited to just buildings, in the past GHF listed designated landscapes, sites, objects, and monuments that compose the cultural landscape of Galveston Island. There is also an opportunity to nominate entire types of built resources such as our listing of Corner Stores and also Historic Seawall Properties.
The Heritage at Risk List is modeled after the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places. Our list has one major difference when compared to the Trust’s, we keep a resource on the list until we feel that the threat has subsided or been significantly mitigated.
In depth evaluations for the Heritage at Risk List are done during the judging of our Historic Preservation Awards. The Preservation Outreach Committee works to compile a list of nominations, this list is then sent on to GHF’s Steering Committee of our Board of Directors for a final decision on inclusion. The list will be debuted on May 7th, 2010 at the second annual Sally Wallace Historic Preservation Awards ceremony.
