New Book About Galveston’s Oldest House Available Online
Galveston Historical Foundation announces the publication of a new book by Galveston author Mary Remmers, “Galveston’s Oldest Residence: The 1838 Michel B. Menard House.” The book, illustrated with full-color photographs by the author's daughter, Nancy Remmers, chronicles the life of Michel Menard, one of the founders of Galveston. It also offers a fully illustrated tour of the house as it looks today, after it was restored in 1994 by owners and Galveston preservationists Fred and Pat Burns – a restoration that won the house first place in the annual preservation awards given by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1995. “Galveston’s Oldest Residence: The 1838 Michel B. Menard House.” is available online for $29.99 through www.galvestonhistory.org Author autograph and personalization are available upon request.

Built in 1838 by Menard, one of the founders of Galveston, the house is generally recognized as the finest example of Greek Revival residential architecture in Galveston.

It is filled with museum-quality federal furnishings, a style that was popular on the East Coast at the time of the house's construction and first occupancy. Today the owners donate the use of the house to Galveston Historical Foundation, which uses it as a museum site, a VIP guest house and event venue for parties, receptions, and corporate retreats.  The Menard House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
