Paint Pals
Developed in 1980, this program is underwritten by the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church’s Permanent Endowment Fund , and benefits Galveston's low-to-moderate income families. Paint Pals is a program where GHF organizes a group of volunteers to paint the exterior of an elderly or disabled person's home. Houses must be one-story in height, have wood siding (must be already exposed so no houses with vinyl, aluminum, or asbestos siding), and no part of the property can be used for rental income.
Our grant from the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church’s Permanent Endowment Fund allows us to pay for a professional to repair any rotten materials and prepare the house for painting. Our program is also sponsored by Galveston’s Sherwin Williams store through their donation of paint, and Mario’s Italian Restaurant on the Seawall who provide lunch for the day.
We schedule our volunteers to arrive at the site on a Saturday morning and we work to complete the project during that day. GHF provides all the supplies for the day so volunteers just need to show up in their painting gear.
GHF organizes two Paint Pals houses each year with one in the spring and the second in the fall.
We take applications for Paint Pals throughout the year, and our Preservation Outreach Committee votes on which properties we wish to complete. We strive to distribute our Paint Pals projects to all the neighborhoods in Galveston in order to maximize the effect of this program.
