Public Invited to Texas Historical Marker Workshop at Galveston County Historical Museum Wednesday, August 15
The Galveston County Historical Commission and the Galveston County Historical Museum will conduct a Texas Historical Marker Workshop on August 15th, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Galveston County Historical Museum, 2219 Market Street, Galveston. The event is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in applying for a subject marker or a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark marker is urged to attend.

“Obtaining an historical marker for your property can be a long, intense process. We are here to help, and attending this workshop is your first step,” says Jodi Wright-Gidley, director of the Galveston County Historical Museum.
In 2006, the Texas Historical Commission (THC) redesigned the Official Texas Historical Marker Program. At the August 15 workshop, the new Official Texas Historical Marker procedures will be presented and discussed by Alecya Gallaway, chair of the Galveston County Historical Commission.
According to the Texas Historical Commission, historical markers and designations are tools you can use to interpret, promote and protect historic and cultural resources that are worthy of preservation. Through the designation process, properties important to a community can be evaluated using established criteria and, if appropriate, marked for the education and enjoyment of citizens and visitors alike. Texas has one of the most active and successful historical marker programs in the country; it includes both subject markers, which are solely educational in nature, and Recorded Texas Historic Landmark markers, which convey a legal designation for historic structures and buildings.
