Located at GHF headquarters in the 1861 Custom House (502 20th Street), the Preservation Resource Center is a great source to research more about buildings, historic preservation and Galveston and Texas History. We welcome donations of books, photographs, Galveston City Directories and other material on architecture, Galveston, maritime history, historic preservation, cemetery care, and other related topics. We also appreciate donations of money that are dedicated to purchasing books and materials for the Preservation Resource Center, for general topics or in memory or honor of someone. Your gift will be recognized in those materials.

Building Materials

The Preservation Services Department operates the Salvage Warehouse out of the 1908 Sealy Garage at 908 23rd Street. The warehouse is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and offers architectural items for sale to owners and contractors working on historic buildings on Galveston Island. Shutters, windows, doors, hardware, bricks, and early any architectural pieces in good condition will be accepted. Please call 765-7834 or e-mail brian.davis@galvestonhistory.org to schedule a pick-up or bring your donation by the warehouse.

Other

The Historic Properties Department holds Genteel Junque, an annual sale of donated items that benefits the 1839 Samuel May Williams House, one of Galveston’s oldest remaining houses. The Williams House was built by the founder of the Texas Navy and secretary to Stephen F. Austin, and saved from demolition in 1954 by the Galveston Historical Foundation. Furniture, artwork and other household items are welcome (no clothing please), and a pick-up can be arranged by calling 762-3933.
