Galveston's Dr. Grace Jameson Named GHF's 2008 Steel Oleander Recipient
Grace K. Jameson, M.D., will be honored as Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF)’s 15th annual “Steel Oleander.” The award, a cast oleander blossom sculpted by the late Galveston sculptor David Moore, will be given at a luncheon on Friday, May 23. The event, sponsored by GHF, will be held at the 1880 Garten Verein Pavilion, 2704 Avenue O in Galveston. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Tickets cost $45 each. Texas Seaport Museum Annual Plankowners Party and Auction Planned for June 7
Galveston’s Texas Seaport Museum will be the place to be on Saturday, June 7, when the annual Plankowners’ Party and Auction benefit gets underway at Pier 22 with dinner, live music and a hefty cargo of unusual auction items. The annual fund-raiser helps to support the 1877 ELISSA, restored to sailing condition by Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) in 1982 and named in 2005 as the Official Tall Ship of Texas. The party begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Texas Seaport Museum, the vessel’s home base, on the pier located between 21st and 22nd Streets and Harborside Drive. more

$500 Reward For Historic Griffin Stolen From Galveston's Bishop's Papace
One of the cast zinc griffins that have sat for 116 years at the entry to the 1892 Bishop's Palace at 14th and Broadway has been stolen.
Bishop's Palace, Galveston's most highly visited historic attraction (a house museum), has been operated by Galveston Historical Foundation since December, 2007. The building is owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. The griffin was first reported as missing Monday morning by Jami Durham, GHF's assistant director of historic properties. more

Historic Fun: Sign Up Now for GHF’s Discovery Day Camp
Enrollment is now open for children ages 6 to 12 for the Galveston Historical Foundation’s Discovery Day Camp. Five days of fun, crafts and games at Galveston’s most historic sites, including ELISSA and the Texas Seaport Museum, a Harbor Tour and dolphin watch aboard Seagull II, tours and activities at the Bishop’s Palace, Ashton Villa, the Galveston County Historical Museum, the Menard House, Historic Downtown and The Strand, a viewing of “The Pirate Island of Jean Lafitte,” and much more. The camp will be from Monday through Friday, July 21 through 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch is included in the enrollment fee of $150 per child. Ornithology Exhibit at County Historical Museum to Open March 15
Exhibit a Part of this Year’s Sixth Annual FeatherFest Celebration
“The Golden Age of Ornithology and Printmaking,” a new exhibit at the Galveston County Historical Museum, will open with a free public reception at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 15. The exhibit features work done in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a time when a flowering of the scientific study of birds joined the newly perfected craft of printmaking. more

The 1900 Storm Building Survivor Program encourages people who own structures that survived the Storm to apply for the 1900 Storm Survivor Plaque. The 1900 Storm Survivor Plaques are an important way for the community to recognize Galveston's history and significant historic buildings.
