Join us for March's Foundation Conversation at the Join us for March's Foundation Conversation at the 1859 Ashton Villa! This FREE presentation starts at 11:30 am on Tuesday, March 2, and is presented by members of GHF’s African American Heritage Committee. "Did You know Part II" features a new lineup of little-known facts about Galveston’s African American Community.

Galveston Historical Foundation’s African American Heritage Committee (AAHC) was established in 2002 at the 1859 Ashton Villa, when more than forty community members gathered with a shared passion for preserving the island’s Black history. Leading the charge was Maggie Williams—a Galveston native and retired schoolteacher—who was elected the committee’s first chair. Since its founding, this committee has dedicated itself to identifying, commemorating, and preserving historic sites important to African Americans and the Galveston community.

When you visit @tremonthouse be sure to pay a visi When you visit @tremonthouse be sure to pay a visit to the Toujouse Bar.

Although the building that housed Mr. Toujouse’s saloon was demolished decades ago, his “first-class” bar was saved during the early 1960s. Purchased by a group of doctors, the exquisitely crafted bar and display cabinetry from the 1890s was relocated to a small building near the University of Texas Medical Branch, where it served as the focal point for the Seventh Street Saloon for several years. In 1979, the saloon was closed, and Toujouse’s bar was donated to us and placed in storage.

In 1982, GHF reached an agreement with George Mitchell to place the bar in the lobby of the Tremont House, where it remains on permanent loan today.

However, the partnership with The Tremont House goes deeper than just the bar. We're happy to announce the renewal of a strategic partnership with the hotel, reaffirming a shared commitment to advancing heritage tourism and sustaining the island’s most celebrated cultural events.

Galveston Historical Foundation is proud to announ Galveston Historical Foundation is proud to announce the upcoming development of The Great Storm Experience, a groundbreaking immersive exhibit that will transport visitors into the heart of the most devastating natural disaster in United States history—the 1900 Storm.

This innovative experience will invite guests to step directly into the story of Galveston’s resilience, survival, and transformation. Through cutting-edge interactive design, visitors will witness the raw power of the hurricane, the staggering loss it caused, and the monumental efforts that followed, including the city’s ambitious grade-raising and seawall construction.

Developed in partnership with The Gibson Group of New Zealand, the creative team behind Galveston Historical Foundation’s acclaimed Ship To Shore and And Still We Rise exhibits, The Great Storm Experience will utilize state-of-the-art technology, immersive environments, and storytelling techniques to place audiences inside the pivotal moments that forever reshaped the island.

More than a history lesson, this exhibit will be an emotional journey—connecting guests with the lived experiences of those who faced the storm, mourned its losses, and rebuilt with determination. It will stand as both a memorial and a testament to human resilience, ensuring that the legacy of the 1900 Storm continues to inspire and inform generations to come.
