A new addition to the #GalvestonHistory archives! The estate of Mary Moir Row was kind enough to send us this photo of the "Treasure Island" sign. Illuminated by 3,000 red and white bulbs, the sign was a gift from the Brush Electric Company to the City of Galveston after the 1915 hurricane. ![]()
It was located at 25th and Seawall, where passing streetcars carried people from the train station to the bathhouses and attractions. Unfortunately, the installation had a short lifespan. The 1919 hurricane damaged it beyond repair, and it was dismantled.![]()
Photos like this are invaluable for numerous reasons but ultimately give us all a glimpse into how Galveston Island looked over 100 years ago.
Incorporated in 1954, Galveston Historical Foundation is one of the nation's largest local preservation organizations.
