Stewardship of historic sites, and, in this case, the Official Tall Ship of Texas, requires rigorous work to ensure that the Galveston Historic Seaport : Home of the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa continues to welcome guests and can remain an actively sailed vessel. Over the past few months, GHF staff and crew have worked on re-stepping the mizzen mast. It was initially removed for U.S. Coast Guard inspection, and while out, scarfed repairs were done. Additional work included putting up the Gaff boom, the “smaller spar slung at angle.”
Tradition is a big part of sailing; as such, coins are placed under the mast. We made sure that a Greek Drachma and Texas quarter were returned to their rightful spot under the heel of the mast.![]()
All of this work is done to ensure we’re ready for our 2025 daysail series, and you can see the work firsthand by coming out with us. Details and dates are all at www.galvestonhistory.org/events/elissa-daysails. Thanks to McRay Crane and Rigging, Inc.for their expert operators and trade skills.
