New to the Sally B. Wallace Preservation Awards this year is the category 'media.' Here we want to recognize outstanding individuals, groups, or programs who promote by print, visual, or radio media topics related to local history, historic preservation, and/or heritage tourism.While not a current contender, we want to use Ed Cotham's book about Juneteenth as an example of the type of work that can be done relating to local history. On June 19, 1865, the headquarters of maj-General Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas, issued General Orders No. 3. This order, now known as the "Juneteenth Order," has become one of the most famous orders of the Civil War. But what do we know about the issuance of that famous order on the first Juneteenth? When and how was it issued? Who wrote it? Why was it issued? In this book, Ed Cotham leads the reader through the lengthy and complicated process that led from slavery to celebration.
