Who haunts Ashton Villa? The most popular answer Who haunts Ashton Villa?

The most popular answer is Bettie Brown. Five generations of the Brown family lived in the stunning 1859 Victorian from 1859 to 1926. A spate of deaths decimated their ranks between 1896 and 1920. Miss Bettie, née Rebecca Ashton Brown, was the last member of her family to die inside the home.

For decades, stories about Miss Bettie have lingered. Some claim to see Bettie standing on the grand staircase’s landing. Others say the bed in Bettie’s room never stays made, or that the trunk that sits at the foot of her bed locks without warning.

Many claim pennies fall from nowhere at the mere mention of Bettie’s name.

One rumor in particular draws extra attention: Piano music floats from the double parlor, known as the Gold Room, day and night.

The stories have always attributed the playing to Miss Bettie. But Jami Durham, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Property Research & Cultural History Historian, has questions.

“Bettie Brown never learned to play the piano. Or any musical instrument. Nor was she musically inclined,” Jami says. “Bettie channeled her creative energy and talent into painting.” Bettie traveled around the world to study painting with masters. Her paintings still hang at Ashton Villa.

No, Bettie was not the family’s pianist. That role belonged to her younger sister, Matilda, called “Tillie.”

“Tillie was a homebody and an accomplished musician, mastering both the piano and the violin,” Jami says.

Tillie married young. After years of abuse from her husband, she was granted a divorce, and Tillie raised her three children in her childhood home, where she felt safe.

After Bettie died in 1920, Tillie was left alone at Ashton Villa. She went to New Orleans to live with her grown daughter, where she stayed until her own death in 1926.

Could it be that Tillie drifted home to Ashton Villa?

If we think of spirits as tender souls who long for connection with the living, the idea of Tillie offering music, only to be mistaken for her sister, breaks our hearts. Perhaps Tillie doesn’t mind. But surely Miss Bettie would want us to applaud her little sister, whose playing still rings out from the home they both loved.

On October 27, 1877, a new cargo ship embarked on On October 27, 1877, a new cargo ship embarked on her maiden voyage. The iron barque launched from the shipyard where she was built, Alexander Hall & Company, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Henry Fowler Watt, a merchant in Liverpool, commissioned the build.

Watt named his new ship ELISSA.

Six years later, carrying a large shipment of bananas from Tampico, a port city in southeastern Mexico, ELISSA docked in Galveston for the first time. In late 1886, she returned to Galveston once again.

For the next 80 years, ELISSA sailed the world delivering cargo, primarily throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, even as steam supplanted sails as the transport fuel of choice. Her name changed. She endured different configurations that masked her original beauty.

Then, in the 1970s, ELISSA seemed destined to meet her end in a scrapyard not far from Athens, Greece.

But fate stepped in.

In 1974, Galveston Historical Foundation bought ELISSA, and began the arduous process of restoring her to her original configuration. In 2014, another restoration followed Hurricane Ike.

Today, ELISSA remains one of the few ships of her kind actively sailing. In 2026, she set out on a historic journey: Over 66 days, ELISSA traveled more than 5,000 miles, docking and welcoming more than 25,000 visitors aboard in Boston, New York City, Savannah, and Pensacola, before returning to Galveston.

Just three days ago, she led the start of the 2026 Harvest Moon Regatta. Her regal profile, surrounded by racing yachts and cruising catamarans, caused a stir, prompting joy, awe, and questions as she brought history to life.

Happy 149th birthday, ELISSA. You are so loved.
