A message from Tommie Boudreaux, Chair of Galveston Historical Foundation African American Heritage Committee:As Chair of Galveston Historical Foundation’s African American Heritage Committee, I’m honored to share an important step forward for Juneteenth’s Home – a national initiative that recognizes Galveston as the birthplace of Juneteenth and is building a lasting center for its history, stories, and future. We are pleased to announce that an award-winning team of cultural-planning and museum design firms—SmithGroup, Sources CRM, and The Projects Group—has been selected to lead the master-planning process.This team brings nationally recognized expertise in cultural planning, African American history, and community-centered design. Their past work includes the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Whitney Plantation, the National Slavery Museum at Lumpkin’s Slave Jail, Freedom House/1315 Duke Street, the Sweatt v. Painter Memorial, and the Fred Rouse Center for Arts and Community Healing. Their leadership will guide a year-long planning process rooted in community voices, historical truth, and long-term stewardship.For more than two decades, the AAHC has led the way in preserving and elevating Galveston’s African American history by protecting historic sites, securing markers, publishing foundational research, and helping the story of Juneteenth be honored with the depth and dignity.
