Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF) Board of D Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF) Board of Directors has announced the appointment of Will Wright as Interim Executive Director.

Wright holds a Master of Fine Arts in Communication Design and brings 15 years of experience with GHF, most recently serving as Chief Creative Officer, where he oversaw major strategic initiatives, including communication and marketing, public engagement, and corporate partnerships. During his tenure, he elevated the Foundation’s public profile while leading major campaigns and programs, including the internationally recognized 50th Anniversary of Dickens on The Strand and the organization’s current participation in America’s 250th anniversary celebration through the historic voyage of the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA.

“GHF is built on a remarkable legacy, driven by a dedicated team, and sustained by a community that deeply cherishes its past,” said Wright. “I look forward to building on this momentum and ensuring that our island’s history continues to inspire generations to come.”

GHF’s Board of Directors expressed confidence in Wright’s ability to maintain organizational momentum during the transition.

“The Board welcomes Will Wright into his new role as Interim Executive Director,” said GHF President Clay Rogers. “Will’s 15 years of experience with GHF and working with previous Executive Director Dwayne Jones make him well prepared to take on this demanding job. The Board looks forward to working with Will and all of GHF’s outstanding staff.”

NYC

For the last couple of days, since departing the mouth of the Delaware Bay, we have kept the engine off and just sailed. Very…slow…sailing, in VERY…light…winds for most of the first day, but our patience was rewarded with building breezes and a glorious sail, setting the whole fore stack up through royals, north along the New Jersey Coast yesterday and last evening.

This morning we headed through the Verrazano Narrows into New York Harbor, and came alongside our berth at the @brooklynbridgemarina.

Another dream realized. After 40 years, the 1877 Barque ELISSA has returned to New York City with her @galvestonhistory and Texas flags flying, and a very happy and rightfully proud crew.

A great achievement, and our voyage isn’t yet at the halfway point! We hope to see you in NYC - details at galvestonhistory.org/nyc.

Regards,
Captain Andrew Ellers

FOLLOWING….

These “noon report” posts have talked a lot about the wonderful experiences we’ve been collecting over the course of the voyage thus far and the incredible efforts of the staff and crew to get ELISSA to this point. But we also have to thank the foundation of this endeavor and the visionaries who made it possible.

ELISSA herself is an amazing piece of maritime history. One of the last 19th-century iron barques still sailing. The design and fabric of her hull are why we are here. When shipowner Henry Fowler Watt ordered the construction of ELISSA from Alexander Hall shipyard in Aberdeen, Scotland, he specified the best for his new ship. Her iron plate in particular was procured from the renowned iron works in Low Moor, Yorkshire.

While iron vessels were already being built for decades by the time ELISSA was launched in 1877, iron was still new for vessels trading on the high seas. The industry was quite conservative with this new material and, at that time, built ships more like wooden vessels but with iron. The combination of this, with Watt’s plans for his new vessel, Alexander Hall’s design and construction skills, and the raw materials of her hull is a significant part of why we still have her with us today.

The majority of her hull is still the original riveted wrought iron. As we rounded Cape Hatteras in heavy weather on our way north, watching ELISSA’s hull continue to perform the way her owner and builders intended was an enduring inspiration to honor them and keep this beautiful barque sailing.

The final image here shows ELISSA’s original call sign, which was “Whiskey, Victor, Kilo, Golf” (as expressed in the international phonetic alphabet). The crew prefers to go by “Watt’s Very Kind Gift”.

Regards,
Todd Grove

STEERING BY THE SAILS

Just a quick one today as we sail ELISSA north along the New Jersey coast towards Sail4th 250.

I thought I’d share a little explainer regarding the way that our course is listed below in today's data.

There are different types of the “course ordered” for the person at the helm. When ELISSA is maneuvering in restricted waters like a channel or harbor, the quartermaster may be given landmarks, such as features ashore or navigational aids like buoys, to steer for. Most of the time we give compass courses to steer by, and at times like these there are “sailing commands.” This last category tells the helmsman to keep the ship in a particular orientation to the wind. Our current course of “Full & By” means the ship is to be steered as close to the wind as possible while keeping the sails Full.

Regards,
Captain Andrew Ellers

ABERDEEN TO TODAY

It's easy for those of us whose work is connected to ELISSA's to get used to her place around us. Her outline, literally and figuratively, is part of Galveston and its history. The past few weeks of this voyage have been an incredible reminder of her impact for those who don't have the good fortune of being near her. Each stop has been full of earnest appreciation for the ship, the crew, and the voyage. Our past few days in Chesapeake City have been no exception. Thanks to everyone for the photos, comments, and updates. Seeing our ship's reflection in your communities has been amazing.

ELISSA's story is an impressive one. Built in 1877. Rescued and restored in the 1970s. She sails today thanks to countless people who invested time, dollars, research, labor, and love. These few photos capture incredible moments of her in Greece, undergoing work that would eventually bring her to Galveston. She visited Galveston twice in the late 1800s, and it's a tangible connection to our island's maritime history that we still celebrate today. Each of those individuals, and all who have visited her deck (and those who will see her in the coming weeks), is part of her continuing story. Simply put, we can't wait to welcome you on board.

The next few days will be filled with preparations both on the ship and on land as we prepare for her arrival in New York City. While there, we'll be sailing, celebrating, and commemorating, and we hope you can join us. Details on all of our activities are at galveston250.com/nyc. From there, we head to @sailboston, then back, with stops in Savannah and Pensacola.

Regards,
Will Wright

CHESAPEAKE CITY, MARYLAND

After a few days on the upper Chesapeake Bay, just ‘gunk-holing’ (sailing about days and anchoring up nights in small non-descript spots), yesterday afternoon we “went alongside”. We docked at the marina at Schaefer’s Canal House Restaurant in Chesapeake City, Maryland. This is a little town on the C&D Canal, the 16- or so-mile-long manmade waterway that connects the top ends of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, the “C” and “D” of its name.

The crew is getting some maintenance done on this stop, but also getting a chance for some downtime and a run ashore. @schaefers_canalhouse is a bit of an institution, with a history almost as old as ELISSA! They have a great tradition of welcoming tall ships to their docks and have shown exceptional hospitality. And wow, is it popular. The place was packed last night, and it was hoppin’! Lots of folks walked down the dock to see ELISSA, but unfortunately, due to the docking situation (no ability to rig gangways), we have not been able to have any public tours. Still, everyone ashore is getting a great chance to see the flagship of Texas and the pride of Galveston.

Our voyage with ELISSA continues to set records. Besides being further north and east than the ship has been in 40 years, the dockmaster here says this is the biggest ship they’ve ever had tie up.

Regards,
Captain Andrew Ellers
