===========ELISSA Captain's Log: 12 noon, Sunday, July 19th, 2026===========YOU CAN’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT…. “Fair Winds & Following Seas!” How many thousands of times have we heard that during ELISSA’s voyage? It comes from our many well-wishers in Galveston, our friends and families, in online comments, and everywhere we’ve stopped. Just people granting the hopeful wish of smooth, easy, fast sailing. We certainly have had many of those days on our journey this year, but we’ve also had some “CONTRARY” conditions.We had that glorious sail on Thursday from Boston across Massachusetts Bay, and down past Cape Cod, but then by the wee hours of Friday morning the winds turned against us. Our route is towards the Southwest. To get to our next destination of Savannah, the winds are FROM the Southwest. Right in our face. So they are NOT ‘fair winds,' and given time, those winds build up sea swells from that same direction, directly at ELISSA’s bow. So we have also not had ‘following seas’, but rather have been pushing into “head seas." While we have not been rolling a great deal, we have been pitching a lot, as you can see in the video. So what do we do? We keep some of our fore and aft sails set, and we motor with ELISSA’s engine running to keep us making progress. We do not run hard, accepting slower speeds to NOT batter our way into these big-headed seas. Last night, 40 miles off of the mouth of the Chesapeake, we had the worst of a weather system move through with some higher winds (20-25kt, gusting 30). Today we are left with a “confused sea”, but a breeze we can sail in, and so we do, with a continuing threat of storms. We aren’t going fast, but everyone is happy to get a break from the engine noise and the more unnatural motion of motoring into the seas.
